As a group, we decided to choose the thriller genre for many reasons. One reason being that it would provide us with a new and engaging experience. In AS Level Media Studies all the members of the group except one chose horror as their genre. Thriller is a new genre to all of us and would be something very exciting to do. This also means that we would have the opportunity to learn new filming techniques during the process of making this film. For example, eyeline matches were not something we included in our short movies last year, but it’s an editing skill that’s commonly used in thriller films. Another reason is the feeling we’re trying to get at with the film. We wanted our film to be something that was engaging and left the audience on the edge of their seats. Since we had all done horror before, a thriller was the next best thing. Things that are common in thrillers like jump cuts also make the film seem like it’s moving faster which is also something we wanted to achieve. Our other choices of genre were action and drama. Drama was the least liked choice. This was due to dramas being known for having complicated plots. Since the film is only 5 minutes long, we as a group didn’t want to make it something overly complicated that left the audience confused. Action was the group's second choice. We really liked this genre because like a thriller it’s a very engaging genre. The only downside to the genre was that a common theme between action movies is violence. None of was really wanted to include harsh violence or the use of fake blood in our film this year. However, a thriller will give us all the engagement of an action movie with little to no violence. All these reasons plus the fact that we feel like it suits our pitch the best is why we chose to do a film in the thriller genre.
